Spring Independent School District (ISD) is located twenty miles north of Houston, TX in Harris County. This fifty-seven square mile school district is home to over 130,000 people and includes a wide diversity of residential areas, including the historic Old Spring in the northeastern zone and more suburban development in the southwestern region. The district does not include, however, any incorporated towns or cities.
More than 33,000 children study in Spring ISDs thirty-one schools every year. These campuses include three high schools, one ninth grade center, six middle schools, one primary school, one intermediate school, eighteen traditional elementary schools, and one high school career academy. Among these thirty-one schools, fifteen have been labeled as recognized and one as exemplary under the 2008 Texas State Accountability Rating. Spring ISD has been rated as academically acceptable overall.
The students academic success can be attributed in part to the culture of responsibility that Spring ISDs administration attempts to cultivate. For the past four consecutive years, Spring ISD has been awarded recognition for its superior achievement in financial indicators under the Texas financial accountability rating system.
Students in Spring ISD come primarily from minority groups, as more than 38% of the student population is African American and nearly 36% is Hispanic. The school district offers opportunities for success at all levels for these traditionally-disadvantaged groups. Some of Spring ISDs programs include bilingual and ESL programs, prekindergarten classes, honors programs, and Advanced Placement classes.
Spring ISD is located in one of the fastest-growing regions of Harris County, and new buildings are constantly being constructed. Part of this growth stems from the 1,200 evacuees who fled to the area following Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita in 2005. Administrators continue to develop five and ten-year master plans in order to keep up with the growth and changes.
Because the district continues to grow so rapidly, Spring ISD has a constant need for quality teachers who care deeply about their students. Many positions are available, especially for bilingual elementary school teachers. The starting salary for a teacher with a bachelors degree is $43,205. The schools also provide teachers with laptops so that they can utilize the technology that the school system makes available to further the students education. Every school comes with wireless internet access, and classrooms also offer much of the latest technology for teachers and students to use.
Teachers in Spring ISD also enjoy a number of other benefits. Many businesses or organizations in the region offer discounts or other benefits to school employees and often to their families. Some of these include: child care, department stores, insurance companies, museums, restaurants, hotels, salons, and fitness centers.
